Dawn Robinson, the powerhouse vocalist who helped shape the sound of the ’90s as a founding member of En Vogue, has revealed a shocking personal struggle—she’s been living in her car for nearly three years.
In a candid YouTube video, Robinson, 58, opened up about her situation, saying she initially hesitated to share it. “Some people told me, ‘You shouldn’t talk about it because you’re a celebrity and what if they judge you?’ But so what? Life is life,” she said.

Robinson explained that in 2020, she was living with her parents in Las Vegas. That arrangement worked—until it didn’t. She then moved to Los Angeles at the suggestion of her former manager, who initially offered her a place to stay but, as she later discovered, didn’t actually have room for her. Left without options, she spent months in a hotel before realizing she needed a different plan.
That’s when she found the “car life” community—people who choose to live in their vehicles. “At first, it felt like a camping trip,” she said, embracing the lifestyle. “I felt free.” While many might view her situation as dire, Robinson insists she’s not looking for pity. Instead, she sees it as an unexpected journey of self-discovery. “I’m learning who I am, as a person and as a woman.”
Despite her resilience, Robinson acknowledged the challenges. She misses her family and lost her beloved dog Max while living in her car. Still, she remains optimistic. “If I could have an apartment, I would. But I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.”
Robinson, best known for hits like “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Free Your Mind,” was a key part of En Vogue’s success, earning six Grammy nominations. She left the group in 1997 and later had brief reunions. Now, she’s documenting her unconventional path, encouraging others to take risks. “Be spontaneous. Do the scary. F— fear.”
