EU must prepare for catastrophic climate events, agency says

BRUSSELS, March 11: European countries must prepare for catastrophic risks ranging from floods to heat waves as climate change is affecting every sector of its economies and societies, the European Union Environment Agency warned.

Policymakers should launch new plans to address the challenges that are posing threats, the Copenhagen body said in its first analysis of Europe’s climate risks.

According to the European Economic Area (EEA), Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world and is warming at twice the rate of other continents.

The EEA says the disaster will depend on what policymakers will do to counter the upcoming risks of climate change, such as improving insurance, improving coverage, redesigning infrastructure, and protecting outdoor workers from extreme heat.

The EEA has sounded the alarm that 36 climate change-related risks could hit Europe by the end of the century without the necessary measures, including health crises, obstructions in agricultural productivity, and infrastructure disasters.

With the current pessimistic approach, thousands of people could die from economic damage from heatwaves and floods, the EEA says.

The EEA added that this catastrophic situation would result in an annual loss of 1 trillion euros.
