Europe risks losing credibility over silence on Gaza, Belgian MP says

BRUSSELS, 3 March: A Belgian parliament member, one of 200 members who signed a petition calling for an arms embargo on Israel, said Europe’s reputation is at risk if it remains silent on Gaza.

Belgian Member of Parliament Simone Moutquin told Al Jazeera, “We Europeans are very hypocritical and if the opinion we have on the issue of Ukraine and Russia is not the same on the issue of Palestine, then we will have no reliability to speak on it in the future.”

More than 200 members of parliament from countries that provide military aid to Israel have demanded that the arms supply to Israel should be stopped.

Lawmakers from 13 countries said in a signed letter that they will not remain complicit and will take harmonized action within their legislative domain to stop the arms supply to Israel.

The Belgian parliament member said his country should stop funding Israel and that if it continues its potential genocide.

“As a signatory state to the Convention Against Genocide, Belgium has a moral and legal responsibility to take action to prevent the threat of genocide, so I think this letter is a good step but we have to go further”, Moutquin said.
