G7 calls on China to lift ban on Japanese food

TOKYO: The G7 countries have urged China to lift the ban on Japanese food.

The G7 industrial powers suggested lifting the ban but didn’t mention China’s restrictions in its announcement.

China weaponizing food

The statement said the G7 countries opposed any effort to weaponize food dependencies.

“We deplore actions to weaponize economic dependencies and commit to build on free, fair, and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationships,” the G7 statement said.

Chinese ban on Japanese food

Two months ago, China imposed a ban on Japanese fish imports when Japan released treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Japan and the U.S. have criticized the ban as unjust, and Russia recently implemented a similar restriction. Japanese exports to China plunged by 41% since August, after the ban was imposed.
