Hamas presents Gaza ceasefire proposal to mediators

DUBAI, March 15: Hamas has laid out its terms to mediators and the United States for a Gaza ceasefire, including the release of 100 Palestinians serving life sentences in exchange for Israeli prisoners, according to a proposal reviewed by Reuters.

Hamas says the Israelis released in the first phase will include women, children, elderly, and sick prisoners in exchange for 700-1,000 Palestinian prisoners, according to the negotiating proposal.

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the proposal put forward by Hamas is still based on unacceptable demands.

Netanyahu’s office said the proposal would be presented before the Security Committee.

Qatar and Egypt are trying to ease the rift between Israel and Hamas to save more than half of Gaza’s population from starvation.

The Qatari government has not yet commented on the progress in the negotiations. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi says, “We are trying to negotiate a deal in Gaza with the aim of allowing maximum aid access to Gaza.” In his statement, Al-Sisi also warned of any possible Israeli attack on Rafah.
