NEW DELHI: The Indian Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a ban on products carrying a halal tag, The Indian Express reported.
The prohibition covers the production, storage, distribution, and sale of food items with Halal certification, effective immediately.
Notably, products intended for export are exempt from these restrictions.

Why UP banned halal products
The decision to ban the sale of halal-certified products came after several companies were named for using halal-certification to boost sales.
The order said certain companies were exploiting the religious sentiments of people to boost sales by providing fake halal-certifications.
Official statement
“Strict legal measures will be implemented against any individual or firm engaged in the production, storage, distribution, buying, and selling of Halal-certified medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics within Uttar Pradesh,” the official order said.
The UP government statement accused Halal India Private Limited Chennai, Halal Council of India Mumbai, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust Delhi and Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra, of playing with religious sentiments of a minority.
