Iran ramps up threats against Israel after consulate attack

TEHRAN, 4 April: Iranian officials on Wednesday reiterated their determination to retaliate against Israel for Monday’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

In a televised statement on Wednesday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said the attack would not go unanswered. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said Israel would be punished for attacking a sovereign territory.

“With God’s help, we will make the Zionists regret the crime of attacking the Iranian consulate in Damascus,” Khamenei said in a Hebrew-language post on social media.

The US noted that it played no role in the attack, nor it had any prior knowledge of a potential attack on the Iranian embassy.

Due to the continuous targeting of Israel on the Lebanese borders by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, Israel expanded its sphere of operations and started violating international norms and laws by attacking consulates.

Khamenei also appealed to people worldwide to raise their voices against Israel on the Day of Al-Quds (which Iran celebrates on the last Friday of Ramadan).

Iran announced the funerals of its dead generals to be held on Friday, where the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Major General Hossein Salami, will deliver final remarks.
