WASHINGTON, 19 March: The United States gave a strong warning to Israel about launching a ground attack on the city of Rafah, saying that the humanitarian crisis could worsen with the attack on the densely populated city.

US National Security Advisor Jack Sullivan said that President Joe Biden is still committed to defeating Hamas, but he has informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the operation in Rafah would be a big mistake.

The operation could increase civilian deaths, worsen the current humanitarian crisis, add to the ongoing chaos in Gaza and isolate Israel internationally, Sullivan said.

Biden told Netanyahu on the phone to send his intelligence and military officials to Washington so we could inform them of our concerns about the Rafah operation, Sullivan said.

Since October 7, Rafah’s population has gone from 300,000 to 1.5 million, meaning that Rafah is a safe haven for war victims and an ideal access point for aid supplies.
