KABUL/TEHRAN: In a significant diplomatic move, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, recently visited the Iranian capital.
The Afghan delegation met with the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
This high-level meeting underscores the growing ties and cooperation between the two nations after severe military engagements on the border recently.
Diplomats review multiple domains of collaboration
The discussions between Baradar and Amir-Abdollahian touched on various domains, including politics, economics, education, culture, and more, the Afghan foreign ministry said.
“Mullah Baradar Akhund provided a comprehensive overview of their trade and transit expansion plans with Iran, the establishment of technical committees to facilitate cooperation across various sectors, Afghanistan’s engagement with regional and global partners through Iran,” Baradar said.
Afghanistan stressed on exports
“I think there are various problems. Our exports to Iran are very low. We don’t even have $5 million in exports to Iran, but we have $2 billion in imports,” said Mohammad Younus Momand, deputy head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment.
