WASHINGTON, 6 Nov: Netflix has announced layoffs and the closure of several game studios, including its Los Angeles-based triple-A studio led by former Overwatch Executive Producer Chacko Sonny. The company confirmed that its gaming division is shifting focus towards generative AI, intending to “accelerate development and create novel gaming experiences.”
This transition marks a strategic pivot in Netflix’s approach to gaming, though it has had an impact on employees affected by the closures and workforce reductions.

Mike Verdu, Netflix’s Vice President for GenAI in Games, shared on LinkedIn that the company is adopting a “creator-first” approach to AI. His vision emphasizes placing creative talent at the core, with AI serving as a tool to speed up development for larger teams and provide innovative capabilities for smaller teams. This approach aims to enhance creative flexibility and accelerate game production.
While Netflix’s exact plans for generative AI in gaming remain unspecified, industry trends suggest significant possibilities. Generative AI technologies, including new game engines and tools for generating concept art, character voices, and in-game dialogue, offer expansive potential for the future of Netflix’s gaming division.
