ISLAMABAD/MOSCOW: Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia hinted at the possibility of Pakistan’s inclusion in BRICS.

The ambassador, Muhammad Khalid Jamali told the Russian state-run news agency TASS that Pakistan has applied to join BRICS and expects assistance from Russia.

Pakistan is in contact

The ambassador said Pakistan was in contact with BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) nations.

“Pakistan would like to be part of this important organization, and we are in the process of contacting member countries for extending support to Pakistan’s membership in general and the Russian Federation in particular,” Mr. Jamali said.

How will India react?

The Indian government is expected to lobby against the inclusion of Pakistan.

In 2022, Pakistan’s Foreign Office blamed a country for blocking Pakistan’s participation in BRICS, an apparent reference to India. “Regrettably, one member blocked Pakistan’s participation.” the FO said.
