A research report has said the global carbon emissions will soon breach the 1.5C threshold set by the Paris Agreement.

A report published in the journal Nature Climate Change said the 1.5C limit could be breached by 2029 rather than 2030.

The report blamed the record level of carbon emissions of the last three years.

2023 is the warmest year on record

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 2023 was the warmest year on record.

The year frequently breached the 1.5C threshold, with the average surface temperature reaching 16.38°C, the UN said.

“The temperature anomalies are enormous – far bigger than anything we have ever seen in the past,” Petteri Taalas, WMO’s Secretary-General, said.

The Paris agreement

The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 to keep the world temperatures below the 1.5C above pre-industrial times.

According to a 2021 report, the agreement has become a failure as the prominent signatories failed to uphold their commitment.

The research study was published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
