Russia releases video of Putin flying nuclear bomber

MOSCOW, 23 Feb: Russian President Vladimir Putin flew on a modern TU-160M strategic bomber and gave a message to the West about Russia’s nuclear capabilities.

Giant bombers, codenamed Blackjacks by NATO, are the modern form of bombers of the Cold War era.

State TV showed the flight of the modernized plane live from the Kazan runway, and correspondent Pavel Zerubin happily called it a unique event.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the plane’s route was a military secret, but Putin’s flight lasted 40 minutes, according to TASS news agency.

The Tu-160M bomber is capable of carrying 12 cruise missiles,12 nuclear missiles and can fly up to 12,000 kilometers in the air without refueling.

Putin, who is expected to win his sixth term next month, flew the bomber at a time when the Ukraine war and the death in prison of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny have strained relations between Russia and the West.

According to some Russian and American diplomats, they have never seen relations between the two countries so bad, including the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
