Scientists from the European Space Agency have detected a large hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. The gigantic hole is estimated to be around 26 million square kilometers in size.
Hole will not increase warming
Usually, the holes in the ozone layer are associated with increase in temperatures, but this is an exception. Experts associated with the agency said the hole wouldn’t increase warming over Antarctica.
The European agency monitored the ozone by using the Copernicus Sentinal-5P satellite.

What caused the giant hole?
This year’s giant hole was caused by volcanic eruptions that occurred at Hunga Tonga in Tonga during December 2022 and January 2023.
Claus Zehner, agency’s mission manager for Copernicus Sentinal-5P, said the water released at the time of the eruption caused chemical reactions and altered its heating rate.
