Taiwan's strongest earthquake in 25 years kills 9 people

TAIWAN, April 3: Taiwan’s worst earthquake in 25 years on Wednesday killed seven people and left 77 people trapped in tunnels and collapsed buildings.

Buildings could be seen leaning to one side in TV images, and officials said the quake had a magnitude of 7.2 and was centred in the eastern county of Hualien, where it struck at 8 a.m.

According to a local hospital official, the earthquake was very strong and sounded like the house was about to collapse.

The earthquake’s depth was 15.5 km, and the earthquake occurred when people were going to schools and offices.

Tsunami warnings were also issued for Japan and the Philippines due to the earthquake, which were later lifted.

Videos from the scene showed rescue workers rescuing people through ladders and rapid caned slides on the other side, which caused the subway system in Taipei to be shut down but later reopened.

According to authorities, 60 of the 77 people were trapped in the tunnels, including two Germans.

The most important thing now is to save people, said Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. He further informed that the railway link of this area will be opened soon.
