Ukraine rejects Pope Francis calling for talks with Russia

KYIV, 12 March: Ukraine on Saturday rejected Pope Francis’ call for an end to war and dialogue with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Pope is conducting virtual mediation and that Ukraine will never bow to Russia.

In his interview, the Pope said one should have the courage to wave the white flag and negotiate when things are not going well for one side.

Many are saying that for the first time, the Pope mentioned the white flag or defeat word commenting on the Ukraine War, while previously, he was only pushing for a negotiated solution to the problem.

Zelenskiy did not directly name the Pope in his address, but instead used the word referring to religious figures who are helping Ukraine.

“They support us with words, prayers and actions, and that’s what the church is all about,” Zelenskiy said in a video message.

“Our flag is a yellow and blue one, this is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail. We shall never raise any other flags,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.
