US concerned Israel may launch ground incursion into Lebanon

TEL AVIV, 1 March: Senior officials of the Biden administration have expressed fears that Israel may launch a ground attack against Lebanon.

CNN reported that US intelligence and administration officials are concerned Israel could launch a ground invasion on Lebanon in the coming months.

A senior Biden administration official told CNN, “Our assumption is that the Israeli operation will take place in the coming months.”

He added that this is not necessarily the case, but it is more likely.

The Biden administration is in discussions with Israeli and Hezbollah leaders to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon; if successful, it would eliminate the possibility of a ground attack.

“I think what Israel is doing is increasing the risk in the hope of the negotiation process. Some Israeli officials are calling it an attempt to create a threat, and some are calling it military necessity,” a senior official said.

Another senior official said that the consequences of such a move could be dire, the proportions of which we do not know.

According to CNN, Israel has repeatedly attacked the American-backed Lebanese army, after which the United States asked Israel to stop the attacks.
