WASHINGTON, March 21: After days of delays, US congressional representatives introduced a $1.2 trillion bill for defense, homeland security, and other projects on Thursday, giving lawmakers less than two days to act on it because of the government shutdown.

The Republican-controlled House will vote on the mega bill on Friday, giving the Democratic Senate just hours to pass six other bills that include $1.66 trillion in government spending for the fiscal year that begins on 1 October.

Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer urged his fellow senators to act quickly on the legislation as soon as it reaches the House floor.

As soon as the House takes action, the Senate must pass it before Friday’s ultimatum to avoid a shutdown.

Since the new fiscal year began on October 1, Congress has had to pass four temporary bills to address spending problems to avoid a shutdown.

The Congressional Budget Office has warned that the debt could increase over the next thirty years, noting that the current debt, which is $34.5 trillion and covers 99 percent of GDP, will reach 166 percent in 2054.
