US State Dept human rights official resigns in Gaza protest

WASHINGTON, 29 March: Annele Sheline, a Middle East analyst who promoted human rights on behalf of the US government, has resigned from his post due to President Joe Biden’s continued support for Israel.

Sheline announced her resignation in an interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday, citing human rights violations in Gaza.

I couldn’t continue my job any longer because human rights advocacy is impossible under these circumstances, Sheline told the Washington Post.

Shelin was preceded by the resignations of US State Department Political-Military Affairs Director Josh Paul and Biden appointee and Palestinian-American activist Tariq Habash in October last year.

Tariq Habash praised Shailene’s resignation and said there are still cogs in the US government who want to do critical work.

“It’s not surprising that there are people who tried to do important and critical work related to human rights at the State Department who felt like they were unable to do their job,” Habash told Al-Jazeera.

Sheline resigned because of the Biden administration’s continued support and supply of arms to Israel.
