CAIRO, March 10: France, Britain, and the United States shot down dozens of drones belonging to Iran-backed Houthi militants late Saturday as they attacked the bulk carrier Propel Fortune and a US destroyer, according to the US military.
“We hit cargo vessels and US destroyers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with 37 drones on Saturday,” Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised statement.
US and coalition forces destroyed about 28 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on Saturday, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).
No ship or commercial vessels were damaged in the attack, CENTCOM said. The aerial drones were intended to target US military and commercial ships, it said.
The French military said its warships and jets also shot down four drones that were targeting European ships.
UK Marine Trade Operations (UKMTO) also confirmed attempts to attack the ships and the forceful response by the coalition forces.
The Houthi militia has been targeting US and its allies commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab since November to show support for the people in Gaza.
