WASHINGTON: Iran is intentionally enabling attacks on ships in the Red Sea, the White House said.

The White House said Iran was behind the recent spike in attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea.

The National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan further said attacks on cargo ships are against international norms.

Cargo ships under attack

A number of cargo ships and a US Naval destroyer came under attack from Yemen-based Houthi rebels.

The U.S. military said three cargo ships were attacked in the southern Red Sea. Multiple drones and missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen towards the commercial ships, the U.S. military said.

The USS Carney downed three drones and intercepted several missiles heading towards the ships.

U.S. warship came under attack

The Times of Israel reported that a U.S. warship, the USS Carney, came under attack during the spree of drones and missiles.

“The drone was headed toward CARNEY although its specific target is not clear. We cannot assess at this time whether the Carney was a target of the UAVs.

There was no damage to the U.S. vessel or injuries to personnel”, CENTOM wrote on X.
